The SentrySafe weighs 39 pounds. That surprises everyone. But 39 pounds is nothing to a guy with a dolly and a pickup truck, which is why most safes under $200 get stolen whole, not broken into. The fix is simple: bolt it down. Here's how to do it right the first time, with the tools you probably already own.

The best way to secure any safe under $200 is to anchor it to a concrete slab or a stud with 1/4-inch lag bolts at least 3 inches long, and the whole job takes about 30 minutes. I've installed dozens of these for customers who bought the same Amazon Basics and SentrySafe models I review here. The process is identical, the tools are cheap, and the difference in real security is massive.

Compared to just leaving it on a shelf

A 39-pound SentrySafe sitting on a closet shelf is a gift to a burglar. It takes four seconds to grab and another ten to walk out the door. Once it's bolted to a concrete slab or a stud, that same safe becomes a project. The thief now needs tools, time, and the willingness to make noise. Most burglars have five minutes and a crowbar. They don't want to spend those minutes on their knees trying to rip a safe out of a floor.

The Amazon Basics Steel Security Safe, at $59.99, is lighter and thinner than the SentrySafe. It needs anchoring even more. I've tested both with my 24-inch crowbar, and an unanchored safe of either brand gives up its door gap in under two minutes. Anchored to a stud, both hold much longer. The crowbar attack stalls out when the box won't move.

What you need

Gather these before you start. No trips to the hardware store halfway through.

That's it. No special anchors, no epoxy, no concrete screws unless you're going into a slab. For wood subfloors and studs, lag bolts with good bite are the answer.

Step 1: Find your target

Open the safe and look at the pre-drilled holes in the floor. Most SentrySafe and Amazon Basics models have them. Measure the distance between holes. Transfer that measurement to the floor. Mark your pilot holes with a pencil.

If you're going into a wood subfloor, find the studs first. A stud finder works, but you can also knock on the floor and listen for the solid sound. For a concrete slab, you're good anywhere, but check for radiant heating lines before you drill. I've seen that mistake. It's expensive.

Step 2: Drill pilot holes

For wood, use a 3/16-inch bit. Drill straight down through the subfloor. For concrete, use a masonry bit and go slow. Start with a center punch to keep the bit from wandering. Drill about 1/2-inch deeper than the bolt length. Concrete dust gets everywhere, so have the shop vac running.

The pilot hole matters more than people think. Skip it and you'll either strip the bolt head or split the wood. I've replaced floorboards for customers who skipped this step.

Step 3: Deal with the anchor problem

This is where most people get stuck. The anchors that ship with these safes don't fit through the pre-drilled holes by design. The bolt head is too wide. You have to disassemble the anchor assembly, slide the bolt head through the hole from inside the safe, and reassemble it underneath.

The instructions don't say this clearly. Multiple buyers have told me they gave up and just left the anchors in the box. Don't. Take the anchor apart, slide the bolt through, put it back together. It takes two minutes once you know the trick.

Step 4: Set the safe and drive the bolts

Position the safe over your pilot holes. Slide the bolts through the pre-drilled holes in the safe floor. Use the socket wrench and drive them down. You want them snug, not torqued. The bolt should have solid bite into the wood or concrete, but you don't want to strip the threads.

For a 39-pound SentrySafe, two bolts in the back holes are usually enough. For anything heavier or in a high-risk area, use all four. I've seen customers sink those suckers into a stud with 3-inch lag bolts and then desolder the speaker for a clean look. Overkill on the bolts, but that safe isn't coming out without the stud attached.

Step 5: Test the install

Grab the safe by the handle and try to lift it. It shouldn't budge. Try rocking it side to side. If there's any give, the bolts aren't seated correctly. Check the pilot holes, check the bolt length, and re-drive.

I test every install I do the same way. I grab the safe and try to tip it. If it moves, I fix it before I leave. You should do the same.

The beeper problem, briefly

While you've got the door open and a drill in your hand, you might be tempted to deal with the beeper. I get it. The beeper is annoying. Multiple buyers have disabled the speaker entirely, and I've done the electrical tape thing myself on an Amazon Basics safe.

If you're going to do it, check your warranty first. Poking holes in the speaker or desoldering the PCB can void coverage. And remember, the beep is also a security cue. Silent mode means you can't hear it open from the next room. That might matter to you. It might not. Just know what you're giving up.

Anchoring expectations

This is a security box, not a vault. Bolting it down stops the carry-out, which is the most common theft. It does not stop a professional crew with torches and an afternoon. Nobody under $200 stops that. Buy for the threat you actually face, which is a burglar with five minutes and a pry bar.

For most people, that's the right trade. A $59.99 Amazon Basics safe bolted to a stud will stop a smash-and-grab. A $129.99 SentrySafe with a fire rating will survive a house fire, maybe. The fire rating is measured in minutes at a specific temperature, not in "your house burned to the ground." Buy a fire-resistant bag for the irreplaceable stuff and don't trust the box.

Should you bolt it down?

If you own any safe under $200, yes. Bolt it down. The cost is under $10 in hardware and 30 minutes of your time. The alternative is a thief carrying your safe out the door while you're at work. I've opened safes for people who forgot their combination, people who lost their keys, and people who wanted to know if their "secure" safe was actually secure. The ones who bolted it down were never the ones calling me.

This is a 30-minute job for a permanent upgrade in security. Do it this weekend. Your future self, the one who doesn't have to explain to the cops why the safe was in the neighbor's yard, will thank you.
